Research into similar films

Taken

This film is similar to ours, 'Counterplay' as it is about a young girl who gets attacked by a stranger. We show the parents to have left for vacation and left the daughter alone at home whereas in taken, the daughter goes away for vacation. We chose to keep the daughter  at home due to the location as we think a lonely house best fits our genre of a horror.

I think we should use this in our film when our victim is on the phone to her friend after hearing a knock on the door. I want our victims environment to be cold, dark and lonely and her friends house to be warm and cosy to juxtapose the environments to make her setting seem a lot worse. Another film called 'The Lovely Bones' does this in a different way but is equally effective.

The fast paced shots in Taken creates a high amount of suspense and tension which i want to create in our horror. The end of the Taken trailer is also very effective as the title and credits come on screen in silence apart from the diagetic sound of the mobile phone. This fits in with the horror genre and would be useful to use in our film to create a sinister atmosphere.

Logos

As we had to create our own production logo, we had to create a company name in which we could include on our logo. From looking at existing production logos we have seen that many companies use film related puns as their names. When discussing ideas for our logo name, we was going to use the idea of placing our initials together in a sequence to make a unique name. However, this type of thing has been used loads. After plenty of discussion, we gathered the idea of the name 'Scream Productions'. By using this as our name it gave us many different options in creating our logo.

Basic logo ideas;

  • Open mouth
  • Film strip
  • Mouth open/screaming
  • Side of face shown screaming
Colours to be used;

  • Black
  • White
  • Red

Existing production logos.

I decided to create a mood-board of many existing production logos in order to get a greater idea of what seems to work and to include in our own. I can see from many existing companies that the use of the film reel and the film its self is a popular option. Many of the existing companies also use film or media related puns. For example ; Reelium, Take Two. Many companies tend to keep the colour schemes of their logos really simplistic by using black and white. I believe this can be really effective as they are memorable due to their simplicity. The most familiar of these production logos include; Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Universal and New Line Cinema. I find that the most original of these logos are the independent companies. For example; Grow Production is extremely unique along with HandMade.
For our own production logo we believe that the use of a film strip is really quirky and really exaggerates what the company is. From looking at these existing companies i now have a greater idea of what to include in our own logo in order for it to be memorable.

Individual Analysis of Title Sequence

Part of our task is to create a title sequence as part of our film. In order for us to create a successful one I conducted some research and looked at some of the already existing title sequences that are out there today.

The title sequence of the TV show Dexter consists of the main character, 'Dexter', getting ready in the morning. Some of the seemingly normal stuff he does though have connotations that give away details about his personality and job. This is clever by the directors as they are giving hints to the audience, without giving too much away. In my opinion the title sequence really draws the audience in and would definitely make most people watch the actual show.

One title sequence I particularly like is the one used for the TV show 'Walking Dead. Below is the title sequence I am talking about.

It consists of showing several moving shots of places that feature within the TV show. I like this as it gives the audience a taste of what sort of places the walking dead takes place but does it without giving too much away as to what happens. This is something that I'd like us to use within our own film and I hope that it will be just as effective and successful.

This research has been very useful for me and has given me an insight into how long the title sequence should last and has shown me a few ideas of what we could include within our own.

Similar Films

One film that is similar to our idea is Strangers. Strangers consists of a young couple staying in an isolated vacation home. Whilst staying there, they are terrorized by three unknown assailants. Our film is similar to this as our character is also being terrorized by an unknown assailant in an isolated home. By watching The Strangers, we were able to pick up some important iconography and some other good ideas that we can use within our own film.

Individual title sequence analysis.

The title sequence opens by showing the company that produces the film. From the background an image of a girl spinning becomes clearer. It is shown in blues and reds. These colours to me suggest the horror genre as areas where supernormal activity appears, things seem to become cold, hence the blue. Also horror movies tend to include iconography such as blood which suggests the use of the red. Her eyes then glow, suggesting something isn't quite right, this instantly creates suspicion. This scene then ripples out, then we see the word 'presents'. After this, different shots of many different locations are seen, all of these look abandoned. This part of the title sequence reminds me of The Walking Dead title sequence which suggests everything is empty and gone. Names of actors are then seen in what appears to be blood splats, which is a really good aspect to use as it further exaggerates the genre. The text is seen in a simple font with the use of the colour white which makes it stand out from the background. The name of the film is seen right at the end of the opening sequence which i believe is a really good aspect as it keeps the audience guessing. The title follows the theme of the rest of the sequence as we see smudged/splattered blood. The name of the film is seen to be spelled out in blood again giving a spooky/horror feel.

Individual analysis of a title sequence + screen shots + link to video

I have done some research into title sequences and what is expected in a horror/thriller type of opening. I have looked at sound, images, editing and credits. I film i found what a short horror film and the opening had lots of connotations of horror films.

This shot is using auto focus and the background is blurred and the credit is standing out. I would like to use this in our film as it shows that the storyline is a mystery and not clear until the end.

The opening off this film is something we were going for as our opening scene shows the stalker looking at the girls Facebook page. The background's lighting is dark, where our character will be sitting which shows he is mysterious and unrevealed.

This title sequence had a lot of pull focus throughout which i'd like to use in our title sequence as it add's pace and movement to the title sequence which will build up tension and suspense.

Research into title sequences.

This title sequence is for a short film named friend request. This has similar aspects as to what ours will need to include as it also being a short film. As the title sequence opens, a piece of eary tension building music begins to play. A blue screen appears displaying character images in red surrounded by blood splats and hand prints in blood. Actors names are seen in a bold white text with smaller white text below displaying their character name. The title sequence is very cool but the whole thing could be much more interactive by possibly having small clips of the film slotted between screens of the title sequence rather than being blocky.

This horror film sequence opens with a small amount of creepy music. This instantly creates a large amount of tension suggesting the genre of the film. The text seen in the title sequence gives the illusion of blood droplets again further suggesting the genre of the film. When the name of the film enters the screen, an illusion of light shining is seen. When actors names appear they begin to shake, and disappear to then reappear, this again suggests the genre as ghosts/typical horror movie figures appear and disappear throughout.

Research into Genre

A horror/mystery film usually includes:
  • Victim - usually stereotyped as a woman
  • Killer/antagonist - usually stereotyped as a male
  • Tension, danger, suspense
  • Shadows
  • Footsteps/creaking doors
  • mysterious music, tense, thrilling, slow paced to fast paced
  • Fast paced editing shots - tension

In the film 'The Strangers', the woman is seen to be the victim and the killer in the background is male. We use the stereotypes of a woman being a victim and a male being the psychotic killer in our film. However, due to the twist in the end of the film, we subvert these stereotypes. We also subvert a stereotype of the woman as she is seen to be dealing and buying drugs which is usually seen to be a male.

Setting
  • Abandoned/lonely
  • no way of escape
  • Verisimilitude - real setting, real events

An abandoned house is shown in 'The Woman In Black'. This house is shown to be very scary as you know no one is in the house, but noises are heard. In our film, we wont have a huge abandoned house like this example, we use what looks to be a family home and is used ironically as the daughter of the family is left all alone there. By using a nice, welcoming looking home, the audience wont expect what is going to happen. We use verisimilitude as the house is real and a intruder and murder is a real like event.

Iconography
  • Knife/gun/weapon
  • Blood
  • Scary/dark/unknown figure
  • Dark clothing

In our film we will use a knife which will kill the male which will also need fake blood. These props link with a typical horror and gruesome film. We will also be using a lot of shadows and dark figures as the figures are not told or shown to the audience which adds to the suspense and the mystery.

Cinematography
  • CU shots
  • LS
  • Canted angles
  • Pans
  • P.O.V shots
  • Track

I will use close up shots on individuals or important objects to show emotion and confusion. Long shots will be used in the house to establish and put emphasis on the girl being alone and her lack of safety. Canted angles are ubiquitous in horror and thriller films as they show that something weird is happening or the character is confused or unstable. We will use these to show the intruder breaking in and trying to murder the girl. P.O.V shots get the audience involved as they feel as though they're in the same frightening position as the victim or killer. Both pans and tracking add to the fast movement which build up suspense and tension which we want our audience to feel which we will also use a lot in our film.

Target audience.

We believe that our target audience will be 15 to 23 year olds. We believe this as they characters in our film are seen to be in this age group, making the film seem more real for the audience as it could possibly be relatable to them.
It would also need to be of an age rating of 15 due to the content in the film. This is due to our film including the idea of illegal substances. Also, the level of violence included makes it a higher age rating.

Many films in our chosen genre area have the same age rating as our film due to the content of the film. Films with the same age rating as ours include; Insidious, The Purge, The Fog, Drag Me To Hell.

With The fog, horror is seen through the amount of mysterious deaths and the fact a strange fog hangs over the town. This is a 15 as ghosts of former residents of the town return to haunt the people that killed them.

Drag Me To Hell is a horror movie based around the haunting of a woman.

The Purge is a rating of 15 due to the level of violence included. As the film is based around crime being fully illegal except for one night, the level of violence seen is to an extreme level as many people get killed.

Treatment

Title: Counterplay
Duration: 5 minutes
Audience: Our film has some features of violence and drugs, which means that we have put the certificate as a 15. This, obviously, rules out all people under the age of 15. More specifically, we have decided to aim our film at teenagers and young adults between the age of 15 and 23. The audience will have a distinct interest in films with a horror/thriller genre.
Distributor: We have decided to have an independent distributor for our film as our genre is quite independent based. So we have done our research and decided that Hammer would be the most appropriate.
Synopsis: The scene opens with two hooded figures doing a drug deal, from their shape, we can see that they are possibly men. The drug dealer, receives the money from the other figure. the other figure is then seen running off from the dealer. A close up of the dealers face is shown. He is angry. The film then cuts to show a young girl in her house preparing herself for bed. Once in bed she posts a status upon her social networking site expressing that she is home alone as her parents have gone away on holiday. The film then cuts to see a man looking at the girls social networking page after she had posted the status. The girl is then seen locking all the doors in the house and checking that all windows are shut. She then moves on to turn her bedroom light off and returns to bed. The time is 3am. The girl is awakened by a knock on her front door. She tries to ignore it, but it gets much louder. She then sneaks downstairs to the front door as she is curious. She opens the door to find that no one is stood there. Puzzled, she steps onto the front step and looks around. She still doesn't see anyone. Running back into the house, she makes sure that the door is locked behind her. She picks up the phone and dials her friend. She goes on to explain what has just happened and that she is scared. Whilst on the phone, you can see the male figure stood behind her. She turns to walk into the kitchen and see's the man stood behind her in the hallway. She screams and then runs to try and open the front door, when she realises its locked she sprints upstairs and locks herself in her room. She goes to ring 999 but realises her phone is downstairs after dropping it in shock when seeing the man, so she has to use the landline. When she dials 999 all she hears is a continuos beeping as the phone line had been cut. From outside the room, we can hear creeping footsteps. A shadow is seen from under the door. An envelope is pushed under the door. Curious, the girl goes over and opens the envelope. The film then flashes back to the woman only giving the drug dealer one real note. It cuts back to the girl sat in the corner of the room. She is shaking and crying. Next, we see a close up of a hand pulling a knife from within a draw. A dark figure is seen leaving a room approaching the other figure from behind. The film then cuts to the girl leaving her house holding a knife covered in blood.
Suggested Elements:  -Flashback to a previous scene in the film, done with a blurred effect.
-A closeup of of a hand pulling a knife from the draw.
                                    - A piercing scream.

Individual research into similar films

Our film is a Thriller/Horror, with a sub genre of stalking.

There is a similar film in Cape Fear
In this film there is a convicted rapist, released from prison after serving a fourteen year sentence, stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him.

This film is similar to ours because its about a person specifically targeting a certain person or in this film a certain family because of something they have they done.

Another film similar to ours is Stalked, which is about a woman being in new york city.

This film is similar to ours because it is about a woman on her own being stalked and strange things happening to her. There are plenty of scenes in this film, that we could use or take and develop the idea, which would help us in the process of making our film.
She is a pretty ugly woman, isn't she?

This is me. I am beautiful.

Genre Research for final film idea

The genre of our film is Horror/Thriller. In order to make our film fit into this genre, we needed to do some research into what the genre consists of. Horror/Thriller films usually include;
- A killer/antagonist - usually this is stereotyped to be male
- A victim - usually this is stereotyped to be a female
- Dark lighting
- Suspense/danger
- Unsettling non diagetic music
- Fast paced editing shots to create tension

Setting;
- Usually consists of being a deserted house/venue.
- The setting is usually a real setting that could possibly occur in real life. This adds to the fear within the audience.
- Heavily damaged and decorated in a dark, gloomy fashion

A good example of the typical type of setting found within this sort of genre, is the mansion from the Woman in Black. The Mansion fits the above criteria perfectly and really adds to the scary feel that the film is wanting to create among the audience.

Genre Research for film idea 1

My first film idea fits in with the genre 'Thriller' and is very similar to the film panic room. The film is about a divorced woman and her diabetic daughter take refuge in their newly-purchased house's safe room, when three men break-in, searching for a missing fortune. The womans daughter begins to struggle with her lack of treatment for her diabetes so the woman has to venture out of the panic room to retrieve the medical equipment. The trailer for the film is below.

Genre research.

A film in which has similar aspects to the idea that we have created is Psycho. Psycho is an extremely old film so many film have taken aspects from this film and recreated them.
I believe this film is similar to ours as it involves a stabbing scene which is unexpected as the killer appears from behind.
The stabbing scene is similar to ours in that the killer is still unidentified. It wont be until the end of the film that the killer is revealed. This adds a level of suspense to our film and clearly places it into the horror genre. Another feature in which is similar to an idea used in our film is the fact that the killer is just a silhouette. We are going to use this feature to hide the identities of both the killer and the victim a secret so the audience don't know who's the killer and who's the victim.

Possible Distributors

Our film is a typical thriller/horror so we would like our distributor to be a mainstream conglomerate such as;
  • Warner Bros
  • Paramount
  • New Line Cinema
  • 20th Century Fox
I would choose these distributors because they have distributed very successful horror and thriller films such as The Exorcist, The Devil Inside, Friday the 13th, Psycho and The Omen. They have also been successful in recent horror films such as 2014's Annabelle and Devil's Due.

When looking into niche distributors I looked at Hammer Film Productions. This specialise in horror films and will be good as our film is horror.

These are 7 of many horror films that Hammer have produced and they're all successful, therefore we will chose Hammer to distribute our film.

Similar films.

A film in which is similar to my idea would be the texas chainsaw massacre. This includes many similar genre features and iconography to what my idea does. However, this film has an age rating of 18 due to the amount of gore and violence in it.

Genre research for film idea 2.

Genre: Action
My second idea is an action film which includes a woman going undercover in order to shut down a large company. this is similar to many other action movies as these all tend to include a bad guy who is doing something which may put others in danger. This is then followed by a good guy or person who comes to save or resolve the problem.

The dark knight is similar to my second idea as there is a problem in the film in which someone needs to resolve under a certain time limit.

These films all include similar iconography as they are from the same genre.

Another film that is similar to my idea is the Die Hard series. This series of films are extremely full packed with action and violence. These are aspects that would be needed to be included in my film to make it an action. However, with our films only being a duration of five minutes it would be extremely hard to include every aspect in which big movie franchises do. Also, we don't have the equipment in which we would need to create explosions and the level of violence needed to show the genre of the film. Having this content in the film would also mean the age rating may be much higher as it would be unsuitable for certain age ranges.

When i have researched into age ratings for these types of movies most of them come out as a 15. However there are some exceptions such as SALT, which is a 12a. By getting their film down to a 12a rating it allows them a much wider target audience as it can be watched from a much lower age.

Genre research for film idea 1.

Genre: Horror
The genre in which i wrote my first story on was a horror. I believe these are very interesting films as they use cinematography and mise-en-scene to create an amazing overall feel. My story involves a group of girls who have a friend that will never go out at night, but the friends don't understand why. The girl turns out to be a crazy serial killer who only kills at night. This idea is similar to an American TV series called Dexter. The twist in the series is that Dexter actually works for the police but at the same time is working against them.
Typical horror iconography will be seen throughout throughout, as this film is a gory horror these things would include; knifes, saws, chainsaws and surgical equipment.

A horror film that could be similar to this idea of mine is the Saw series. However, in most of these films the harming is done to themselves as it is a matter of life or death.
Similar iconography is seen throughout all horror films and the main one which would be seen throughout mine as well as most others is blood. This is a huge factor in horror movies which adds extra gore and as it is a phobia of many people, it can also be seen as scary.

A similar film also would be Texas chainsaw massacre as this also involves people being tortured and harmed. These films could have huge influence on my own as the genre, sub-genre and iconography all include the same things.

Film Idea 2

Genre: Thriller

A group of students set off on an educational trip to new york. The first scene is their arrival to New York at the airport. Jake, one of the members of the group, decides to venture off on his own to the money exchange desk. Whilst in the queue a man approaches him and asks him if he wants to go to a a near by bar. Jake says yes and follows the man after exchanging his money. They go outside and walk across the street to the bar. Whilst in the bar, Jakes drink is spiked by the man and begins to feel unwell. He passes out and the man takes his wallet and the rest of his valuables. The event/trip manager comes along and finds Jake. He immediately rushes him to hospital. At the hospital Jake is taking some time to respond in the presence of the doctors and it isn't looking good. Thankfully Jake responds to the treatment and begins to make a slow recovery.

Storyline 2

Genre - thriller A policeman (Brian) got ready for his normal everyday business. all happy and enthusiastic. having breakfast with his family. He got to work and walked into the building, went to his workstation where there was a post it note on his computer saying IF YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY BACK, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS. Brian was confused and did not know what to do, but before he could do anything the phone rang. He answered the phone to a man with a deep voice, telling him he needs to go to a cafe at the corner of Barnsley street and that he cant tell anyone what he is doing. He takes the post it note down and follows the orders, where he is met with a piece of paper with his name on it a phone number and a riddle. It then tells him to go to his house with the answer. He spends a couple of minutes working it out. He then goes to his house walks in and shouts the answer, where he is greeted with everyone jumping out shouting HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Film Idea 2

Genre - Thriller
Young girl attends first day at University away from home and alone without her friends or parents. She  travels there by train and reaches her destination lost and with no idea where to go. She asks a male for directions and he leads her to it. When they get there, it isn't the university but in-fact its a big abandoned building (which he says is his home). He says he is just stopping off for a map, she gets worried and starts to find the exit. She gets lost and hears the man shouting her and his footsteps get louder and louder. She rings her mum and then man finally approaches her, the phone is found on the floor and the voice of her mother is heard.

The film 'Taken' is very similar as theres a male stranger who shows two girls the way to their hotel whilst they are on holiday as they don't know where they're going. The stranger turns out to be a criminal who kidnaps the girls which is the same as my film idea. Both 'Taken' and my film both use a male who is the kidnapper and young girls as the victims which are stereotypes used often in thriller films.

I also got the idea of the phone call as it creates a lot of tension and suspense which makes the film more interesting to watch.

Film Idea 1

Genre: Thriller

Jake sends the stranger, Joel, to go find an epipen. Joel searches everywhere to find one and eventually comes across a drug store. But because it is late, it is shut. Joel eventually finds a person who claims to have an epipen, so they both rush back to the toilet. When they get back to the cubical, Jake is really struggling. Film Idea 1

Genre - Thriller
Storyline -
First scene opens with 2 people doing a drug deal, who both are wearing hoodies covering their face and look like men. The one who is dealing, gets the money then runs off with the drugs as well. A close up shot is used on the other man showing his anger. The scene then cuts to young girl getting ready for bed. She is left in house alone over the weekend while her parents went away on holiday. She posts a status on her social networking site showing she's got the house to herself. When she posted the post, a strange man is shown to be looking at her page.
The girl is shown locking the doors, turning the lights off and getting into bed. (3.am)Whilst in bed she hears a knock on the front door. She hesitates to answer but the knocking increases and gets louder. She sneaks downstairs and opens the door. To her surprise, no one is there. She steps outside onto the front step and looks around, still no one is there. Running back into the house, she makes sure the door is locked as well as the windows and back door. She phones a close friend and tells them she's scared. While she's on the phone, you can see the male stood behind her. She walks into the kitchen on the phone and see's the man stood in the hallway, she screams and tries the front door, then runs upstairs and locks herself in her bedroom, she dials 999 and the murderer forces through the door and grabs her. (OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE). Black screen the fades back into the girl sat strapped into a chair with masking tape on her mouth. (to be continued)

I got my idea for the man stood behind the woman from the film 'The Strangers'. When i watched this film, seeing the killer in plain view and knowing the victim had no idea the killer was behind them created a lot of suspense and tension as the victim thinks they're safe.

Film idea 1.

Genre: Horror
Storyline: Group of friends planning to go out on a saturday night. One member of the group is reluctant to joining the group on their outing. The night of the outing her friends go round to her house to try and get her to join them. When they arrive they find her door open, they decide to go inside to try and find their friend but there is no sign of her. They can see a light coming from the basement so decide to go and follow it. When they enter the basement the light trips, so one of the girls uses a falshlight on her phone to guide the way.
